Ashley signed me up to work 2, 8-hour days with a “varying bonus” that allegedly depends on distance traveled from their home base of Downey, CA - knowing full well that Day 2 of these trips is nearly a 16-hour day in itself! How does Ashley know? She’s worked these events and is a company co-owner for 25 years.
Yet, Ashley intentionally scammed me out of at least 8 additional hours of pay on EVERY trip - at time and a half or double time - because Ashley knows few jobseekers understand the nuances of CA employment regulations regarding overnight travel jobs. How is Day 2 of these overnight events about 16 hours? Typically, the Travel Show Coordinator meets Neal at about 7am in the morning to set up the event, which starts at 11am. The event runs to 3pm, with a breakdown taking to 4 or 4:30pm. Next, you hustle 5 huge bags of assorted crap to the airport, check the bags in, wait for your flight for another hour-and-a-half to 2 hours, and fly back to LA. Upon landing, we have to retrieve the bags and load them in the Morrison family SUV, typically around 11pm that same day.

For our Chicago job fair, there was no temporary staff to help us, so it was just Neal and I running the whole show. I told Neal, “I am thinking about going to lunch around 1pm, can you cover the front?” Neal responded, “Just grab a bite and come back in 10 minutes.” I stood my ground and calmly stated, “I need my full 30 minute break.” Neal paused before reluctantly telling me to “go to lunch now.”

I decided to bide my time and work a few more trips until we were in a “one party recording state” to record Neal’s response when I finally confronted him on back pay that I was entitled to - for the Seattle trip departure flight debacle. Also,
I wanted to inquire if I was going to get paid for the 2.5 hours I worked overtime on night 1 of our NYC trip, which was the LITERALLY the day before! Neal fell right into my trap and played stupid.

Remember, City Career Fair is a SUPER small company husband & wife enterprise. They might employ 2, maybe 3 full-time employees; with other sales people earning a living solely off commission. I sincerely doubt Neal and Ashley don’t communicate about employee wages, especially when I regularly overheard Ashley and Neal communicate regularly about the most mundane and minute details of their job fairs.
Ashley Morrison Ignores Diverse Workers When They Demand To Be Fairly Compensated.
I emailed Ashley a detailed breakdown of what I was owed per CA state travel law for the 33 hours I worked at the appropriate time-and-a-half AND double time overtime rates for the Seattle trip. This was in stark contrast to the 16 hours she originally paid me with her nominal bonus that barely keeps this job from being totally indentured servitude.
I also included the 26.5 hours I worked for the NYC trip, again not the 16 hours Ashley’s farcical accounting determined I worked. My response from Ashley was a resounding crickets and tumbleweeds.
